SharePoint

SharePoint is a web-based collaborative platform that integrates with Microsoft Office. Developed by Microsoft, it serves as a document management and storage system, but the product is highly configurable and usage varies substantially among organizations.

It is used to create websites and allows groups to set up a centralized, password-protected space for document sharing. You can use SharePoint to store documents in a single location, manage them with consistent business processes, and ensure compliance with corporate policies.

Key functionalities of SharePoint include:

  1. Document Management: SharePoint provides strong document management capabilities, including version control and audit trails, check-in/check-out functionality, and document libraries. It allows multiple users to work on a document simultaneously.

  2. Collaboration: SharePoint provides a platform for team collaboration. It includes features like team sites, co-authoring, and integrations with Outlook and other Microsoft products.

  3. Search: SharePoint includes a robust search feature that makes it easy to find documents and information.

  4. Content Management: SharePoint also functions as a CMS, or Content Management System, allowing you to create and manage web pages, add web parts, and create custom page layouts.

  5. Business Process Automation: SharePoint includes features for automating business processes, like alerts, workflows, and forms.

  6. Integration: SharePoint integrates seamlessly with other Microsoft Office products, like Outlook, Word, and Excel, and also supports integration with many third-party systems.

Remember that SharePoint requires proper setup and maintenance to be effectively used. This includes ensuring proper permissions are set up for users, creating an effective taxonomy (organization of site collections, sites, libraries, and metadata), and more.

Microsoft Power Platform

Microsoft Power Platform is a suite of tools developed by Microsoft to enable business users to analyze data, build solutions, automate processes, and create virtual agents. The goal of Power Platform is to provide a more accessible entry point to key business capabilities for users who are not traditionally developers. The Power Platform consists of four main components:

  1. Power BI: This is a business analytics tool that lets users visualize their data and share insights across the organization, or embed them in an app or website. It provides interactive visualizations with self-service business intelligence capabilities.

  2. Power Apps: This is a suite of apps, services, connectors and data platform that provides a rapid application development environment to build custom apps for business needs. It allows users to create mobile and web applications with no coding necessary. The applications built are typically tied to a business database to enhance and streamline business processes.

  3. Power Automate (formerly known as Microsoft Flow): This is a tool that helps users create automated workflows between applications and services. It helps automate repetitive business processes such as communication, data collections, and decision approvals.

  4. Power Virtual Agents: These are intelligent AI-driven virtual agents (or bots) that can be created without the need for data scientists or developers. They can engage with employees and customers, answering questions and providing information.

  5. Power Pages: By using Power Pages, you can built public facing sites to show case your product and services.

Each of these components can be used individually or together, depending on the needs of the organization. They are designed to interoperate and integrate with Office 365, Dynamics 365, Azure, and hundreds of other apps. They provide a platform for low-code or no-code development, enabling users to create useful applications and automation without needing to write extensive code.
